Walker Royall's profile

The Purpose of An Endowment

President and founder of Briarwood Capital Corporation, Walker Royall, has acquired more than 25 years of experience in commercial real estate. Walker Royall is a member of the Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD) Partnership, and he also is co-chair of the ESD Capital Campaign. He has raised three million of 17 million dollars for the ESD endowment fund as of 2021.

Donors and charitable gifts create endowments for schools to support projects. Well-managed endowments grow over time through more donations or returns on investment. Most times, the fund itself is not spent at all, only returns on investment finance the initiatives. Typically, endowment funds place restrictions on how to spend the funds.

For example, plugging budget caps is not allowed unless the fund was specifically set up for that purpose. Endowments do not serve as reserves either. Donors usually restrict endowed gifts for programs like scholarship creation, professional development, building new facilities, or starting new projects.
