CT-guided V.S. Ultrasound-guided RFA for Early HCC

This is a designated illustration tailored especially for Dr. Chih‑Horng Wu in his new article: "Iodized oil computed tomography versus ultrasound‑guided radiofrequency ablation for early hepatocellular carcinoma," recently featured in Hepatology International (https://doi.org/10.1007/s12072-021-10236-0). HUGE congrats!!
A rough draft was not provided by Dr. Wu in this case, as the illustrator is already familiar with the procedure, and there were published diagrams for similar purposes. Our goal was to make it more straightforward and friendly for readers this time as compared to its predecessors.

As always, a rough 3D volume rendering of the liver and structures that needed to be highlighted were first created using real human CT scans. A favorable angle and placement was decided using that: ▼
The main difficulty of making this illustration lies in the fact that structures inside the organ liver needed to be marked as "regions" instead of certain spots and demonstrated just as clearly as what's on the outer surface; thus the decision of creating a bubble-glass liver after thorough discussion with Dr. Wu to give it that relative spatial concept in which each domain were given a clear demarcation without completely overlapping with each other:
A mistake was made here regarding the neutral position of portal veins, which should not stick out like that if the liver (or person) is lying in this position. Minor corrections were made and this was the final result:
For the second illustration, tons of references could be found everywhere, but we'd like to do something different. Instead of the usual liver segmentation schematic in which a liver is sliced into eight equal parts (which is not the case in real life), we tried to make the it more real and "fleshy". The result with its moist organ surface was quite satisfying:
It was such a great honor to participate in this project and a fun ride to draw something that has been so commonly seen in medical literature.
