CTA Cermak-McCormick Place Station

Like many infill projects along the Chicago Transit system, a narrow right-of-way creates challenges for building out a system to better serve diverse communities. Utilizing constraints as an opportunity, the station takes the form of a tube; creating efficiency for platform function and structure.

Clad in perforated stainless steel, the skin provides protection to patrons while preserving views and a feeling of openness. Three perforated panel patterns were used to reduce wind penetration, maintain visibility, and maximize views without compromising natural light. The convergence of these approaches yield a subtle pattern that allows the station to breath on a hot summer day and protect riders from harsh winter winds.

The station has helped generate billions of dollars in development and sits at the center of a burgeoning entertainment district. With a new events arena, convention center expansion, hotels, retail, and residential, Cermak Mc-Cormick Place serves over a half-million passengers a year; providing surprise and delight to a utilitarian experience.
