THE NEW ROMANTICS - A digital manipulation editorial
I was once told that fashion is not a resort but its an island and if one was ever to visit that island, they would find a group of people who would look like they belong everywhere but at the same time so unique to their own aesthetic that they don’t belong anywhere, they stand out from the crowd and those are the new romantics. They borrowed elements from their preceding subcultures and made it their own with an aesthetic that showcased individualism
The new romantics as a subculture was born out of necessity, it was born out of the need for escapism from the reality that one was looking for, into a world where they could be their own and where they could express themselves like no other channel let them. The new romantics was a great source of expression especially for fashion and make up.
While working on this submission I realized that, I’m probably more of a new romantic than any other subculture considering its reasons for inception, there will always be a need for escapism and self-expression especially with regards to the current worldly scenario. The following digital manipulation is my take on the new romantics and their aesthetics with elements borrowed from the 80’s brought into the current fashion timeline.
