36 days of type 2021

36 days of type is a project that invites Designers, Illustrators and Graphic Artists to express their particular view on letters and numbers of our alphabet. 36 days of restless creativity, where participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day, resulting an outcome of the ability to represent the same symbol from many different perspectives. A project that aims to be a space for creation around typography and its endless graphic possibilities.

Unlike my last two series for 36dot, my 2021 concept was a much more abstract approach. The illustrations are meant to lean on the frame and swell within the given square. Since the letters and numbers had to be very filling for this aim, they hold back a bit typographically. The focus is entirely on the patterns that wrap around the hard edges of the letters. With a mixture of randomly generated color schemes and varying proportions of these textures, technical-organic structures are created that leave room for individual interpretation.
Through the generated shading and contours, many parts of the series look like three-dimensional renderings with depth, which is not really given. Others look like highly simplified, flat illustrations in the style of Futurism or Art Deco.
