Sensory clothing apparel made for autistic teens

SENSORIA is a digital collection of adaptive clothes and accessories designed for sensory therapy. Basic model is made based on autism teens' surveys and features different tactile elements: from puffed sleeves to silicone fidgets.

During the COVID-19 lockdown the anxiety level has increased significantly, especially for children and young people with “sensory fatigue”. This term includes many diseases, united by the constant need of sensory therapy. Russian research confirms the conflict between the adolescent's need to socialize and their growing need for sensory activity.
People with sensory fatigue, including children with autism spectrum disorder, have specific dress requirements and restrictions. Moreover, clothing can become a complete sensory unloading tool in a stressful situation. The main objective of the clothes is to restore their perception of senses through tactile interaction.
As a result of surveys, we identified several general limitations and desires in clothing - greater freedom of movement, the ability to cover the face or part of the face.

This influenced the basic model design. It is a cotton jersey raglan sleeve sweatshirt with a deep hood. The tanks are made of a lighter breathable material.

The hood can be adjusted and cover a part of the face.

An attempt to investigate how differently sensory decorative elements might look has led to three different directions on how this might develop in this way. This can be "pillow sleeves" - an additional element that increases the space around the clothes and forms a security barrier.
Another idea features the sewn-on patches made from different tactile materials - faux fur, Velcro, canvas and metallic. This resembles the sensory boards that are used for sensory therapy in Russian kindergartens and schools.

Finally, we could use Velcro based silicone patches and fasteners.  This allows you to remove and change tactile elements depending on your wish, while the base model remains unchanged.
