I always start with a sketch, some loose drawing with pencil and paper. At this stage I don't really concentrate too much on the details or think too much of the animation. Everything else evolves later on...

In the next stage I jump straight into Illustrator to create vector character and background. I normally go to Adobe Colors for some inspiration.
