A Brief Look at the Dakar Rally

An executive with broad experience in the healthcare and financial industries, Warren Wamberg has served as CEO of Uniphy Health and as president of insurance and corporate business with Human Longevity. In 1997, Warren Wamberg created the United States Charities Racing Team, which raised more than $8 million for charity, and driving for the team he became the first American to complete the 6,000-mile Dakar Rally.

Originally routed from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, the off-road endurance event invites drivers from all over the world to compete in an off-road race across rugged terrain including dunes, mud, rocks, and grass. The first Dakar Rally was held in 1979, stretching 6,200 miles and taking 20 days to complete. The race remained in Africa for 30 years. Then, after being canceled in 2008 due to security concerns, it resumed in South America, where it was held for 11 years.

In 2020, the race was moved to Saudi Arabia, where drivers participated in the categories of cars, quads, utility terrain vehicles, trucks, or motorcycles. Winning the motorcycle category in 2020, Ricky Brabec became the first American to win the Dakar Rally since its inception.
