Hoosegow Park, Arroyo Grande

The location and size of this relatively unknown pocket park in Arroyo Grande, CA, posed a problem for the student designers at Cal Poly who were involved in its redesign.  Local stakeholder groups wanted a makeover for this park, and to draw more attention to it and to the tiny historic jail on site.  My design would accomplish this with two strategically-placed signs, one in downtown pointing in the direction of the park, and then the large main park sign in view of the alley coming from downtown.  The "river bed" themed pathway in the park draws people toward the jail, and alludes to the nearby stream that gives the city its name. (Rendering created with AutoCAD and Photoshop)
At this location shown in the perspective photo, I would propose a threshold/gateway in a "jail bar" theme, with the sign pointing up the alley toward Hoosgow Park.  Especially with a large main sign at the park at the location I proposed, it would be visible if a passerby simply looked up the alley from this location.  In addition to the aforementioned signs, I created a map showing several existing parks in proximity to each other, with a pedestrian route in between them.  This could theoretically be placed on yet another sign in some prominent location in downtown, or even be printed on flyers for visitors who want a sightseeing walk.  (Renderings created with Photoshop (created jail bars with Rhinoceros, brought into Photoshop))
