REFUGEE CAMP
Alternatives of randomly generated aggregations for the Zaatari Camp

This project aims at developing design techniques that can serve an encountered problem of the refugees of the Zaatari camp, using local materials and technology.

To accommodate the dynamic population, an adaptive and modular system is proposed. The design is based on a set of rules between the modules, similar to domino. With its translation into a computational language, the code can generate various configurations of clusters, resulting in an organic urban growth over the entire district.

A system is proposed for the inhabitants to be able to build their houses by themselves. As the modules are built with on-site materials, structural tests were performed on a mixture of adobe with straws through laboratory experimentation and calculation. The results were used for the form generation of the different modules. For construction feasibility, each module is structurally independent to allow a safe construction and future growth, and provided with its design catalogue presenting the required components’ list.
