The 19th Amendment

  • This installation commemorates the75 th anniversary of the 19 th Amendment, which grantedwomen the right to vote. The text of the monumental amendment was applied tothe floor of the main waiting room in Grand Central Station, in eight-footletters (9,276 point type). The effect energized the cavernous feeling of thewaiting room, encouraging visitors to read part of the constitution, simply becauseof its scale and context. A 20-foot propaganda tower served as a frame forhistorical text, images of suffragists, and ephemera. Suffragist rallying songsresonated from the top of the tower.
