    — Signal Architecture + Research

Started in 2016 by experienced architect Mark Johnson, his new studio is based in research and discovery. Signal celebrates the human activities of a place through perception, the movement of the sun, and the passage of time. Focused on connecting people with place, Signal Architecture + Research works to design inspiring places for humankind, drawing distinct influence of experience through materials, function, light, nature, and sound. Our assignment was to create a visual identity, collateral system and digital experience that exemplifies their process, their experimentation and knowledge base.

The identity is based on echolocation, signals being transmitted and then being responded to, similar to the sonar projections found in the natural world. We found paper stocks and natural materials that were in line with the quality and detail Signal puts into the materials they work with. For the physical and digital components we embraced using taglines to capture the essence of each project. We used a type system easy for Signal to show statistics on the builds. There are a few “easter eggs” for you to discover throughout the site that provide a sense of exploration for the user. If you can find it, one of the hidden treasures reveals an audioplayer that plays music curated by the studio that can be played as you navigate the site.
