SO-IL's "Pole Dance," a summer-long outdoor social and spatial project for MoMA/PS1 Young Architects Program, was conceived to merge the physical and auditory through interactive experience. The pavilion was comprised of flexible graphite poles shrouded with a net tent that contained a landscape of hammocks, misters, pools and plants. Eight accelerometers were installed on the poles. By moving and shaking the poles, visitors could activate sounds that were played back within the space. We designed the (unstable) identity system and website for the project, as well as an iPhone application that allowed visitors to collaboratively control the sounds generated in real time, create live diagrams that tracked the moving poles, and effortlessly share their work online.
