Seven years after completing the home of the Academy Awards, the Kodak Theatre, David Rockwell designed the sets for the world-renowned ceremony in 2009 and 2010. The 81st Annual Academy Awards evoked more of an elegant party rather than a formal performance atmosphere. The theater and sets were reorganized and re-envisioned to enhance the energy for the live and broadcast audiences, powered by a visual narrative that unfolded through twelve transforming sets throughout the night that surrounded the making of movies.
For the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Rockwell built and expanded on many of the design innovations introduced in the previous year, including the Swarovski crystal curtain, and the new orchestra and seating structure. Following the past year’s focus on the making of movies, the 2010 design revolved around the love of movies.
