Emergent Surface at MoMA

  • Emergent Surface
2008 | Museum of Modern Art | Design and the Elastic Mind Exhibition | New, USA

Based on new technologies for adaptive building skins,Emergent Surface is a wall that continuously reconfigures itself–portionsselectively disappearing and reappearing. In one condition, the piece appearsas a solid surface with three-dimensional curvature. In another, it resolvesitself into seven slender poles, running floor to ceiling. And between theseextremes lie an infinite variety of configurations.

These different states represent the physical embodiment ofdigital information. As such, Emergent Surface represents a kind of 'materialmedia', operating not on bandwidths of light and sound, but in terms ofvariable solidity and permeability.
