Moroso is known throughout the contemporary design industry as the one of the most experimental furniture manufacturers in the world. Founded in 1953, the company is now led by creative director Patrizia Moroso, who happens to have Senegalese family ties. In 2009, when Stephen was speaking at Design Indaba in South Africa, Patrizia asked him to not only design a new collection of outdoor furniture using weaving techniques in Senegal, but to coordinate, design and art direct the entire group exhibition combining art, architecture and design. Stephen traveled to Senegal and designed, prototyped and wove his collection with the local artisans. M’Afrique included the work of Mandemory and Fathi Hassan in art, David Adjaye in architecture and Patricia Urquiola and Bibi Sek & Ayse Birsel and Stephen Burks in design in a celebratory installation also designed by Burks.
