NYU’s traditional seal depicts an intricate scene of runners moving forward, following the beacon of a lit torch. In the early 1970s, a new, simpler, and more visible icon for everyday use was created. The new mark focused on the idea of torch and flame—a traditional symbol of knowledge, and generally appears in white on a violet field. Today the mark is a common sight throughout the Greenwich Village area of New York.
